WHAT ARE GIFT CARDS?

A gift card (also called a gift voucher) is a type of preloaded debit or credit card that, as the name suggests, is offered as a gift so that the beneficiary can purchase any type of goods or services. Thanks to technological advances in online shopping, these cards need not be physical anymore.

This card is issued by a retailer or entity with the idea that it will be used to purchase products and services either by the individual who acquired the card in the first place or by the recipient of the gift.

Before the appearance of the first gift cards, there were “gift certificates”, which had more or less the same function. However, the proliferation of color printers made it very easy to counterfeit these certificates, so this new format was devised, much more secure.

It looks very similar to the credit cards we are familiar with. It has a magnetic stripe on the back that records the exact amount paid, has a numerical identification, and is backed by an online authorization system.

Some gift cards can only be used in certain establishments ("closed loop" cards, generally issued by stores or restaurants), but others can be used anywhere as long as credit cards are accepted ("open loop" or "network" cards, generally issued by banks or credit card companies).

Many gift cards are rechargeable, while others are for one-time use. Many are generic, but a few can be personalized, even adding messages on them directed at the person to whom it is going to be gifted. There is something for everyone!
