WHAT IS A CROWN?

A crown is a type of head ornament that, unlike tiaras, is shaped like a closed ring. Historically, crowns have been associated mainly with royal authority, although in some cases they have also been worn as an award or decoration for very important merits.

It is increasingly uncommon to see contemporary kings wearing a crown. Moreover, today many different types of crowns have become popular that are very different from their traditional symbolism, such as flower crowns.

The historical use of the crown dates back to antiquity. For example, the Romans used different types of crowns in various contexts:

  • The radiate crown had spikes that symbolized light. This accessory was linked to the divine and only emperors could wear it.
  • The triumphal crown, made of laurel, was awarded to victorious generals in war.
  • The civic crown, made with an oak branch, was given to citizens who had performed a meritorious act.
  • The obsidional or grass crown was awarded to those who had managed to repel the siege of a stronghold.

Medieval European kings usually wore cylindrical crowns made of gold and adorned with gemstones and/or pendants. Between the 9th and 13th centuries, the fashion of placing fleurons or spikes with balls on top of the crown began to become popular. In the 16th century, crowns began to be made with designs particular to kings, princes, and nobility.

Crowns have maintained, to a greater or lesser extent, the same appearance since then, at least in the West.

WHAT IS A TIARA?

A tiara is a type of crown that, unlike the crown, is not closed at the back, so it resembles a headband in terms of shape. However, a headband has a practical function (holding hair), while tiaras are strictly decorative.

Tiaras have been used by kings, nobles, and emperors for millennia as a sign of power and status. In more modern times, and especially since the 19th century, the tiara began to be seen as a valuable accessory that the upper middle class could wear.

Today there is a wide range of tiaras with prices suitable for all budgets. Their use is quite common in weddings and all kinds of formal events.
