WHAT IS FILIGREE?

You may not be clear on what filigree is. It's a goldsmithing technique used in artisanal jewelry that involves creating all kinds of shapes and figures by carving metal or modeling very fine metal threads, often forming a lace-like pattern.

The creation of a filigree piece is a tremendously delicate and meticulous job that in many cases can take weeks or months.

Some of the names that the shapes executed in these pieces receive are: mustache-like designs, bulky shapes, wedge shapes, stick-like long shapes, and intertwined threads. Filigree jewelry tends to be very light because there's often empty space within them.

  • Mixtec filigree was widely spread in Mesoamerica. One of its most famous pieces is the pectoral of the God of Death, found in present-day Oaxaca.
