WHAT IS A NECKLACE?
A necklace is an accessory in the form of a cord or chain that is worn around the neck and primarily serves an aesthetic function. Often, all sorts of adornments of different shapes and sizes hang from necklaces. If the necklace is tight on the neck, it is called a 'choker'.
The necklace is one of the oldest accessories used by humans. For example, necklaces have been found in graves dating back to the Paleolithic era, with an age ranging between 75,000 and 100,000 years.
Prehistoric necklaces were usually made with shells, small bones, teeth, and pebbles. When man began to manipulate metals, small beads of gold, copper, baked clay, or glass paste were introduced.
Although necklaces are more commonly associated with women, the reality is that since ancient times and more or less until the 15th century in Europe, necklaces were also very common among men. The most common type was a ribbon or metal noble chain with engraved pendants.
