FOSSHAPE ® is a type of thermoplastic, a unique fabric that becomes rigid and structured once heated, so it can be used to create a firm base for a hat, costume piece, textile sculpture, etc.
Some of the benefits of FOSSHAPE ® :
It does not fray, and it is extremely lightweight, porous and breathable after stiffening. It is resistant to mould and water damage.
FOSSHAPE ® can be shaped using dry or moist heat. It needs to be heated to around 200 º F (or 90 º C). Steam is recommended, although you can also use an industrial heat gun.
When you start heating the fabric, bring the heat source slowly towards it and use a sweeping motion to heat the whole area slowly and evenly. This will prevent the fabric from heating too quickly and shrinking unevenly.
After activation, FOSSHAPE ® can shrink by up to 30%. The 300 gms variety is about 4 mm thick before activation.
We offer FOSSHAPE 300 AND FOSSHAPE 600.
In millinery, FOSSHAPE ® is a superbly effective blocking material, used as a substitute for BUCKRAM. It is superior to BUCKRAM for many reasons, as it requires no other chemical product for treatment or stiffening. FOSSHAPE ® only needs heat to block and harden, and it can take on any shape. It is also much more durable and water-resistant.
FOSSHAPE ® is ideal for:
Creating a strong yet breathable structure for a hat.
Sculptural work - FOSSHAPE ® can be moulded into any shape you want. It holds a firm structure while remaining flexible.
It can easily be sewn to any other material as a support.
This fabulous contemporary material is revolutionising the way milliners and dressmakers make their creations. It is also very popular in costume design, sculpture and cosplay.
