What is buri?
Buri is a plant fibre* obtained from the leaves* of the buri or gebang palm. It is known as "buntal" or "buri" and has been used to make hats and a fabric called medriñaque. Traditionally, these fibres were also used to make rope, but from the mid-twentieth century they began to be used industrially to make all kinds of items, such as hats and baskets. The buri palm ("Corypha utan" / "Corypha umbraculifera") grows abundantly in the Philippines, as well as in Malaysia, Indochina and the Antilles, reaching up to 20 m in height and 1 m in diameter.
