This specification refers to the weave density. A 20 × 20 DPI sinamay contains 20 fibres per inch in the warp and 20 fibres per inch in the weft, producing a uniform, lightweight and durable fabric with the ideal balance between transparency and structural stability.
How to Block Sinamay
One of the characteristics that makes sinamay such an exceptional material is its ability to adapt to different shapes through the use of water, steam and heat.
Although blocking sinamay requires practice, technique and precision to achieve professional results, the possibilities offered by this material extend far beyond shaping hats. Besides blocking hats, wide-brim hats, fascinator bases and hat brims, sinamay can also be moulded using different techniques to create leaves, flowers, bows, fascinators and many other decorative accessories.
The first step is selecting the most suitable type of sinamay for the piece being made. You may also choose to stiffen the material yourself to achieve the exact level of rigidity required.
Once the material has been selected, it is dampened or steamed (an iron may also be used when appropriate) to make it more flexible before placing it onto a wooden block, cork block or another shaping form. It is then secured using blocking cord, blocking pins or other fixing methods until it completely adopts the desired shape.
Once the piece has dried thoroughly, it is removed from the block, the securing materials are taken away, and the finishing work begins. Excess material is trimmed, millinery wire is added to prevent deformation, and the edges are finished, for example with bias binding. At this stage, the piece is ready to be decorated as desired.
