WHAT ARE SEWING RIBBONS?
A sewing ribbon is a narrow strip of fabric used for decorating, wrapping, and tying all kinds of garments, accessories, embellishments, and other objects.
Ribbons can be made from multiple materials, but the most typical are silk or velvet ribbons. These are mainly used in women's dresses, although their use is very common as an ornament, often with symbolic purposes.
Ribbons have been used by nearly all cultures throughout history. For example, in Ancient Egypt thousands of years ago, royalty often used them to adorn their wigs.
Aside from fashion, ribbons are used for various other reasons:
- Symbols associated with certain social causes, sometimes called 'awareness ribbons' (the red ribbon for the fight against AIDS, the pink for the fight against breast cancer...).
- Ribbon-cutting at the openings of buildings or spaces, which usually involves cutting a ribbon with scissors.
- Medals in sports competitions or identification for conferences, fairs, or events.
- Bookmarks.
- Certain folk dances use ribbons in their choreographies.
- Rhythmic gymnasts use sticks with very long ribbons to perform highly spectacular choreographies.
- In the equestrian world, ribbons are placed in the manes of horses to inform riders about their behavior. For example, if a horse has a red ribbon, it means that it is prone to kicking, or if the ribbon is green, it means that the horse is young and inexperienced.
WHAT IS FABRIC?
Fabrics or textiles are sheet-like materials made by crossing and binding threads or fibers.
When this process is done with longitudinal threads (warp) and transversal threads (weft), the result is called 'woven fabrics.' When it's done by loops that form a mesh, they are called 'knitted fabrics' or 'tricot.' It's also possible to create fabrics by crossing two or more warp threads without weft, like some types of tulle.
