WHAT IS A BUTTON?

A button is an accessory included in many garments (shirts, jackets, blazers) and it is used to fasten or adjust them to the body. The button is fastened by passing it through a buttonhole of the same size as the diameter of the button and which is usually found on the opposite end of the garment or pocket.

The vast majority of them are round and flat. Historically, they have been made of metal, wood, mother-of-pearl, bone, ceramic, or resin, but nowadays they are more commonly made of plastic. However, there are many different types of buttons with different appearances. Some have two or four visible holes, others have a single hole at the back, and others have no holes at all, like duffle coat buttons. These differences are also observed in textures and finishes. For example, many buttons are lined with the same fabric as the main garment.

Some of the most popular types of buttons include:

  • Shanked button, for coats and jackets.
  • Rivet button, more durable because they are metal and very common in jeans.
  • Perforated button, for shirts and blouses.
  • Toggle button, for bedclothes.
  • Frog button or loop closure, like those on duffle coats.
  • Snap button, durable and easy to fasten, especially for children.

WHAT IS A HABERDASHERY?

A haberdashery, also called a notions store, is a shop where products for sewing, knitting, and crafts are sold, as well as certain types of clothing.

Haberdasheries are usually small shops located in city centers, suburban districts, and shopping malls. They typically sell sewing items, textile replacements, fabric trimmings, hair ornaments, costume jewelry, tools (needles, lace, crochet, cross-stitch...), dress accessories, baby clothes, and men's underwear and lingerie.
