ALL TYPES OF NEEDLES AND PINS WITHIN YOUR REACH

Handmaking hats, as well as many other accessories and garments, requires many sewing tools. Two of the most important are sewing needles and sewing pins. At Artipistilos, we provide you with all the types of needles and pins you could need at very competitive prices.

When it comes to needles, you'll find here needles for hand sewing and machine sewing needles. We offer various needle kits in different sizes. We also haven't forgotten about crochet needles, which you can also find here.

As for sewing pins, we have kits with pins of various sizes. We also have boxes with hundreds of pins of the same size. If you're looking for decorative pins, we have several models with beautiful heads (pearls, tree leaves, flowers, etc.). Keep all your pins in a safe place thanks to our fabric pin cushions.

Finally, although they are neither a needle nor a pin, we also offer various types of safety pins, which are always very useful in multiple contexts.

WHAT IS A SEWING NEEDLE?

Sewing needles are a small, straight, metallic object with a very sharp, pointed end and another end with a hole called an eye or loop, through which a thread is inserted (this action is called 'threading'). Its function is to allow sewing, i.e., joining two pieces of fabric with one or more threads.

It is known that the first sewing needles were invented at least 40,000 years ago, although a carved bone tip found in South Africa dating back some 60,000 years could be a needle.

Later, the discovery of metals allowed for the making of copper needles (approximately 5,500 years BC in Anatolia) and later with bronze and iron. The first industrially manufactured metal needles came on the market in 1826.

There are dozens of different types of needles depending on the profession: baquetera and cordobanera, bundling, surveying, harness, pointing, embroidery (those we have in our online store), packing, baling, swordsmith, mesh, passer... The list goes on and on!

WHAT IS A SEWING PIN?

The sewing pin is a tool shaped like a nail but thinner, metallic, with a sharp end and another thick end (usually round or with some ornament). Its function is to hold certain objects or materials together. Pins are especially used by tailors when taking measurements.

Copper pins made by the Egyptians around 4000 BC have been found. Greeks and Romans also used them to hold tunics together, with the wealthy often wearing decorative gold or silver pins. In the 16th century, pins began to be created from handmade iron wire. The first machine to make pins in series was invented by the American Lemner Wright around 1820.

WHAT IS A HABERDASHERY?

A haberdashery, also called a notions or sewing shop, is a store where products for sewing, knitting, and crafts are sold, as well as certain types of clothing.

Haberdasheries are often small shops located in city centres, suburban neighborhoods, and shopping centres. There you can find all kinds of materials and tools for sewing work and other similar activities.

More specifically, they usually sell sewing items, textile replacements, fabric ornaments, hair ornaments and jewellery, tools (awl, bobbin lace, crochet, cross stitch...), dress accessories, baby clothes, lingerie, and men's underwear.

The Artipistilos team is proud to be your trusted online haberdashery. Do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have!
