We can say exactly the same about our wide-brimmed hats. In this case, we highlight our mixed-material wide-brimmed hats, which combine felt in the crown and natural straw in the brim. You will catch everyone's eye with them!

WHAT IS FELT?

Felt is a non-woven textile material with a sheet-like form that is not made through the interlacing of warp and weft threads, but by the agglomeration of layers of animal fur (usually wool) and/or a similar synthetic material using steam and pressure.

Felt is highly valued in sewing for its lightness and malleability, which is why it is often used in skirts, jackets, carpets, and, of course, hats and/or wide-brimmed hats. To do so, it is usually mounted on a lining that gives it a certain structure.

Humans started using felt before woven clothing. It is not known how this discovery occurred, but it is speculated that the idea of this material came from when prehistoric humans saw animals rubbing against trees, leaving matted and tangled fur on them.

In any case, it is known that the first to use this fabric were the nomadic tribes of Central Asia, Russia, and Turkey. They not only used it for clothing but also to construct their yurts, as felt is very light, insulating, and resistant to water and wind.

The non-woven fabric is created by adhering fibers and/or natural or artificial filaments on a sheet or network using methods such as applying adhesives, fusing the fibers together with heat, solidifying the surface of the sheet, or tangling the fibers.

WHAT ARE NON-WOVEN FABRICS OR NWFS?

A non-woven fabric or non-woven textile (NWF) is a fabric made by joining fibers together in a network using mechanical, thermal, or chemical procedures. As its name suggests, these fabrics are not woven; that is, they lack warp or weft.

Since they have no threads, they cannot fray, which makes them a very suitable material for making garments and accessories. Their appearance is like that of a sheet, similar to veil, felt, or nap. They are not very resistant, so they are used to reinforce other fabrics or with linings.

WHAT ARE HATS?

Hats are accessories that serve to block sunlight and keep the head cool or warm depending on the material they are made from. Used for centuries by both the common people and the upper classes (the latter as a prestigious accessory), there is a huge variety of types of hats adapted to the social standards of each era and the particular needs of each season of the year.

Although there are many very different types of hats, all of them have two main elements: the crown, which is placed on the head, and the brim, located at the base of the crown and which serves to protect the face and neck from the sun and/or to grasp the hat.

The size and shape of the aforementioned elements can vary greatly, resulting in different varieties of hats. Many of them you will find in this section. Explore our website and get to know them all!

WHAT ARE WIDE-BRIMMED HATS?

Wide-brimmed hats are a type of women's hat characterized by their large brim, which can be straight or have some waves. The crown is generally low and round, though there are exceptions.

Their characteristics make them ideal for use on very sunny days, which is why the wide-brimmed hat is also known as a beach hat, although wide-brimmed hats for weddings are also common.

There are many types of wide-brimmed hats that can be worn both on a beach day and at a wedding. If you need a wedding wide-brimmed hat for the morning, take a look at our catalog, including our felt wide-brimmed hats.

WHAT IS A HATTER?

Hatters are craftsmen who dedicate themselves to the manufacture, repair, and/or sale of hats.

To make a hat, the first thing is to select the material to be used for its fabrication and cut or shape it according to the reference mold. Then, a special iron is used to define the shape of the hat, and if necessary, the brim is pressed to stiffen it. Finally, the exterior ribbon is added or other adornments such as bows or flowers are attached.

A typical repair that a hatter might do is to renew the inner lining of the crown. For this, the lining must be carefully removed, soaked in solvent, and scrubbed to remove dirt. Another very simple operation is to replace worn linings, ribbons, and adornments with new ones.

The golden age of hatters was the 19th century and much of the 20th century. Today, the use of hats is not as common, so the few who still practice this artisanal craft direct their creations to a more affluent clientele or the world of cinema or theater.
