WHAT IS A MANTILLA?

The mantilla is a transparent female garment, adorned with embroidery, used to cover the head, often attached to a headdress. Its use is widespread both in Spain and in Hispanic American countries.

The origins of this garment come from the ancient cloaks with which women covered their heads during religious ceremonies. However, it is possible that the origins of this cloak go even further back in time, as figures of women with similar headdresses have been found in pre-Roman Iberia.

The lace mantilla as we know it today began to be regularly used in the 17th century along with the cloth mantillas and the silk shawls. The women of the nobility and the upper middle class adopted it at the end of the 18th century.

Lace mantillas are used in Holy Week processions, bullfights, and other traditional and authentic events, as well as in weddings, funerals, baptisms, or masses. It is often complemented with a comb.

As for types, we can distinguish 3 variants depending on the fabric: the blonde mantilla or silk lace (includes silk floral motifs and wavy edges called "castanet points"), the Chantilly mantilla (very light and of French origin) and the tulle mantilla (very light and with a net-like warp).

There are also different types of mantilla depending on the region of origin (Castilian, Leonese, Aragonese, Andalusian...) or for the event it is designed for (mourning mantilla, wedding mantilla, bullfighting mantilla...).

WHAT IS LACE?

Lace is a decorative and transparent fabric adorned with embroidery. Its name is related to how this fabric was made in the past, as it was crafted between the edges of two parallel strips of canvas, as if it were "encased" between them.

It is important not to confuse lace with embroidery, the former being the fabric that the lacemaker creates with thread and needle as if it were a support.

The historical origin of lace is in Renaissance Europe (16th century), it is not clear if in Spain, Venice, or Flanders (present-day Netherlands), although there are similar antecedents in the ancient civilizations of the East.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, lace garments such as ruffs, gorgueras, collars, frills on cuffs, or draperies became fashionable. This contributed to the development of this industry, which spread across the main European countries.
