WHAT IS A CANOTIER HAT FOR WEDDINGS?

The canotier (also known as a boat hat or gondolier hat) is a straw hat with a straight and flat top adorned with a colored ribbon and a short, flat, and stiff brim. While not entirely similar, it resembles the Cordobes hat. Wearing a canotier hat to a wedding guarantees success.

The canotier is a hat made with braided straw. Once the three parts of the hat (crown, cap, and brim) are separately made, they are joined together with rubber. At the base of the crown, there is a ribbon of color, which in the past often represented a school, rowing crew, or institution.

This hat became popular in Europe towards the end of the 19th century. It was part of the attire of Venetian gondoliers, who adorned the hat with a long ribbon called 'nastro del doppio' to distinguish themselves from naval officers. However, it became fashionable in France at the same time as canoeing or 'du canotage' in French, which gave rise to the name of this hat.

Italian immigrants brought the canotier to the USA, where it was very common during the first half of the 20th century.

Due to its material, this hat is ideal to wear in summer, be it for sailing, sports, picnicking, going on a hike, or any formal event. Both women and men have worn it, being a sign of status at its peak of popularity.

Interestingly, the fashion designer Coco Chanel rose to fame thanks to hats of this style. She is well known for her visit to a racecourse where she appeared wearing a canotier hat and a simple tailored suit, at a time when feathers, fillers, and corsets were still in fashion.
