DESCRIPTION:

Sewing involves an immense variety of materials and tools, all of which you can undoubtedly find at Artipistilos. Two of the lesser-known, yet no less useful, are the haberdashery whalebones and variflex.

In this section, you will find top-quality whalebones and variflex. You can get both products in widths ranging from 4 mm to 12 mm. Order as many meters as you need, and we'll deliver them to your home!

WHAT ARE HABERDASHERY WHALEBONES AND VARIFLEX?

Haberdashery whalebones and variflex are semi-rigid rods that are inserted into the hems of party dresses, wedding dresses, communion garments, or period costumes to give them more volume. Being these rods more rigid than the fabric of the skirt, they prevent it from falling to the feet and allow it to have greater extension.

To create this striking effect, simply insert the rod into the inner hem of the skirt.

Although haberdashery whalebones and variflex may seem identical at first glance, they have one difference: the material they are made of. Whalebones are made of plastic, while variflex is made with a material similar to interlining, although it is harder than the latter.

WHAT IS A HABERDASHERY?

A haberdashery, also known as a notions shop, cordwainer, or silk shop, is a store where products for sewing, knitting, and crafts are sold, as well as certain types of clothing.

Haberdasheries tend to be small shops located in city centers, peripheral neighborhoods, and shopping centers. In them, you can find all kinds of materials and tools for sewing work and other similar activities.

More specifically, they usually sell sewing articles, textile replacements, fabric decorations, hair ornaments, and jewelry, tools (like bodkins, bobbin lace, crochet, cross-stitching...), accessories for dressing, baby clothes, lingerie, and men's underwear.

The Artipistilos team is proud to be your trusted online haberdashery. Do not hesitate to contact us for any questions that may arise!

WHAT IS TAILORING?

Tailoring is the craft practiced by tailors that consists of the custom, handmade production of clothes for men and women, that is, without using preexisting sizes like the stores and large surfaces where clothes are sold.

Another one of their tasks is to alter factory-made garments that, due to the standardization of sizes, do not fit the particular measurements of a user.

We could go back to prehistoric times to talk about the first tailors when animal skins were used to create rudimentary garments. However, it wasn't until the birth of the great civilizations of antiquity that the first individuals who exclusively dedicated themselves to this task appeared.

In Europe, tailoring was formalized during the High Middle Ages with the appearance of tailor's guilds, which constituted a system of masters, officers, and apprentices. They also created statues to regulate the profession, for example, mandating that everyone who was a tailor had to affiliate with the guild.
